Putting It Into Perspective: Average Instagram Engagement Rates

Social media marketing

There are many factors that go into a social media strategy and many reasons why you might feel as if your engagement or growth is lacking. And let’s face it, when it comes to Instagram engagement, it’s *never* smooth sailing. When looking at your own business’s performance, it’s good to know what the benchmark is when it comes to engagement rates. More than this, at SBJ, we are super honest about setting realistic expectations when it comes to your social media growth.

It might seem as if Instagram in particular is always changing – for the most part, this is true! This means that what was once relevant and bringing in that engagement, may not be anymore. It’s widely known that engagement and growth aren’t as high or as easy to obtain as they once were. However, the following statistics are still a good indication of how your content performance stacks up against the average numbers.

Did you know that for business accounts, the average engagement rate is 0.96%? To put this in perspective, this table is a good guideline to follow:

  • Less than 1% = low engagement rate
  • Between 1% and 3.5% = average/good engagement rate
  • Between 3.5% and 6% = high engagement rate
  • Above 6% = very high engagement rate

Something else to keep in mind? A massive 70% of posts don’t even get seen. Yep, we know – it’s difficult out there as a business! Long story short? Organic engagement isn’t quite what it used to be, so if you feel like this is you, you’re certainly not alone!

Carousel posts are a great way to boost engagement. Each time a gallery is ‘swiped’ through, it counts as engagement. With that said, video content is *booming* – especially Reels. Ready for a #bomb? 💥

Instagram Reels have an average engagement rate of 1.95%.

Compared to photos? That’s *massive*.

We always recommend experimenting with reels when it comes to growing your brand and its audience – it’s not hard to see why! Here’s another #funfact: accounts under 5K followers generally experience the most engagement from Reels.

So while engagement and growth on Instagram can feel like an uphill battle, we hope these stats have put things into perspective a little! Instagram is certainly not all about the numbers – it’s important to focus on creating an authentic audience that genuinely values your content. That is when the real growth happens!
